 CHAPELWOOD UNITED METHODIST CHURCH HISTORY
Lake Jackson, Texas

Return to About Us

Our Mission: To Love God, To Serve God, To Share God
Our Vision: To Celebrate in Worship, To Commit To Ministry, To Connect with Community

Chapelwood was organized in August, 1960, to meet the needs of a rapidly growing Brazopsort area; it was joint effort of the Galveston District Board of Missions and the Lake Jackson First United Methodist Church Board of Missions. The congregation met in the Lake Jackson Junior High School until September 1962. At that time the congregation moved into into first building on Willow Drive, and held a service of consecration on September 23, 1962. The membership totaled one hundred and forty. Six additional classrooms were built in 1966. A new sanctuary was completed in time for the tenth anniversary in 1970. In 1982, more Nursery and Office space was added. Membership grew quickly and then steadily with changes in the Brazosport area. 1988 began with 700 members on the roll. The current Fellowship Hall was built and consecrated in 1992. The current sanctuary was consecrated in 2002.

Begun as a “mission” church, we have continued to emphasize missions and outreach, along with Christian education and discipleship. A long tradition of work camps began in the mid sixties when Faulk Landrum took a group of youth and adults t central Texas. This tradition continues today with many youth and adults working with U.M. ARMY and Mission Board workgroups in Texas, Connecticut, Kentucky, Mississippi, Reynosa, Mexico, Costa Rica, Alaska and many other places. Our congregation includes all ages. It has the warmth of “family” and the enthusiastic spirit of a winning team—both of which we are! All our ministry is Christ’s ministry of outreaching love. Through God’s spirit we are enabled to share a common life of gratitude and devotion, witness and service, celebration and discipleship. We offer Christ!
