Stephen Ministry

The Stephen Ministry at Chapelwood provides one on one Christian care to individuals who are entering a transition period of their lives that may be very stressful or traumatic. Examples of these transition times are the birth of a child, loss of a loved one, elder care, job loss, divorce, or long term hospital or nursing home care. Stephen Ministers are trained lay persons who are assigned, men to men and women to women, to provide Christ centered caring for each individual.

Stephen Ministers are trained to listen, be there for their assign care receiver, and keep everything confidential. One of the key elements of this ministry is the Peer Group supervision that occurs twice a month, where Stephen Ministers discuss the caring relationship in a third person manner to make sure that the relationship is meeting the needs of the care receiver.

Stephen Ministers are volunteers who after being screened and interviewed, receive 50 hours of training before being commissioned to help others. Recruiting for new ministers usually occurs during May and June with classes beginning in August.
